If lymphoedema is not adequately treated, it can result in complications that affect quality of life:
- Heavy limb affecting functioning (walking, exercise, daily tasks)
- Difficulty finding and wearing clothes and shoes
- Recurrent infection with / without wound formation
- Development of poor skin condition: inflammation, thickening, dryness, discolouration, eczema
- Reduced exercise due to heavy limb
- Negative psychosocial effect
If left untreated for a prolonged period, the above may lead to:
- Depression
- Sedentary lifestyle and weight gain
- Negative cardiovascular outcomes
Lymphoedema is a chronic condition which is progressive if left untreated. Early diagnosis and treatment will ensure the best possible outcome. It is important that a venous contribution is excluded as this can be treated and the outcome optimised.
