Complications of Lymphoedema

Complications of Lymphoedema

If lymphoedema is not adequately treated, it can result in complications that affect quality of life:

  • Heavy limb affecting functioning (walking, exercise, daily tasks)
  • Difficulty finding and wearing clothes and shoes
  • Recurrent infection with / without wound formation
  • Development of poor skin condition: inflammation, thickening, dryness, discolouration, eczema
  • Reduced exercise due to heavy limb
  • Negative psychosocial effect

If left untreated for a prolonged period, the above may lead to:

  • Depression
  • Sedentary lifestyle and weight gain
  • Negative cardiovascular outcomes

Lymphoedema is a chronic condition which is progressive if left untreated. Early diagnosis and treatment will ensure the best possible outcome. It is important that a venous contribution is excluded as this can be treated and the outcome optimised.
